Work/Life Balance…An exercise in Valuing and
Sequencing Life Choices
Athens, GA (April 12, 2004) “You can do anything you want to do,
but not everything … all at one time,” is the life power
message delivered by Karla Brandau on April 7th to the Graduate Women’s
Business Association of the Terry College of Business.
Asking the attendees to take 100 points and divide them between fame,
fortune, and family was the first exercise that helped attendees to start
their valuing and prioritizing process. Brandau continued, “If
you are clear on your values, you will make better decisions, be able
to recognize value conflicts, and give yourself permission to stand up
for your choices. As you finish your degree, it is not the time to take
up a new hobby like sailing or start the adventure of building your own
house…sequencing life’s activities is a much better strategy.”
Brandau also urged the MBA students to “live in the moment” meaning
they should approach each day with the confidence they can handle the
challenges and with a mindset to “balance” their work/life
experience by taking time to enjoy and experience the “intangibles” of
life each day. Intangibles can be anywhere from spontaneously going out
for pizza to taking off your watch and listening to a troubled friend.
Brandau is a time management and balancing life expert from Atlanta.
